Bootup is able to accept donations of computers and computer equipment from both organizations and individuals. We primarily accept delivery at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Concern, 3103 North Charles Street. If you would like to make a donation, please contact us via our contact form. All donations are tax deductible. We are also listed with the National Cristina Foundation.
We evaluate all donation offers on a case-by-case basis, following the general donation guidelines below:
- Computers
- All computers should be able to run Windows XP or Xubuntu.
- Minimum specifications include: 1 GHz processor, capacity for 512 MB RAM, IDE or SATA HDD interface, VGA or DVI video output, 2+ USB ports.
- Laptops must include a power supply cable or power supply unit.
- At the discretion of its officers, Bootup may accept outdated or nonworking equipment if such equipment can be used for demonstration purposes.
- Monitors
- We can no longer accept CRT monitors, only LCD (flat panel) monitors.
- All monitors must have at least one VGA or DVI video input.
- If a monitor does not use the standard C13 power cable, the power cable or power supply unit must be provided.
- Other Computer and Electronic Equipment
- Including, but not limited to: keyboards, mice, speakers, internal/external hard drives (>40 GB), network routers/switches/hubs (at least 100 Mbps Ethernet), digital cameras, etc.
- Printers, scanners, copiers must include the power cable or power supply if it does not use the standard C13 power cable.
- Cables: standard C13 power cables, Ethernet cables, and USB cables.
- Data Security
- It is the responsibility of the donor to remove sensitive information from any device with physical storage. Bootup will reformat drives in the course of processing donated equipment, but complete removal of all sensitive data should occur before equipment is donated.
- Processing and Internal Procedures
- Bootup will provide a receipt of goods donated including an estimate of the fair market value of goods donated.
- In order to track donations and provide donor feedback, Bootup may retain donor-specific and recipient-specific records along with general records about specific pieces of donated equipment. Donors may, however, opt to remain anonymous, in which case such records will not be kept.
- Bootup reserves the right to sell or otherwise dispose of donated hardware if it is determined that the proceeds from the sale would advance Bootup’s mission more effectively than the donated hardware.
- Thank you to these organizations for their generous donations!
